Mayor Gavin Newsom's Proclamation
of University Mound Ladies Home Day
on November 12, 2009
Whereas the University Mound Ladies Home, established with a bequest from businessman and philanthropist James Lick, has been fulfilling its mission of providing affordable and compassionate assisted living for women since November 1884; and
Whereas the Ladies Home is San Francisco’s only assisted living facility exclusively for women, and one of only a handful of nonprofit facilities of its kind in the city; and
Whereas in a time of economic hardship and with an increasing senior population, the Ladies Home’s affordable assisted living services are needed now more than ever; and
Whereas the Ladies Home is fortunate to have a dedicated and caring staff, working and collaborating in an unprecedented form with eldercare professionals, area universities, and laypeople, all of whom are committed to preserving this affordable living option for women in San Francisco; and
Whereas the Ladies Home is housed in an irreplaceable 1930s Georgian Revival building, replete with gracious architectural details, bringing joy, beauty, and dignity to the residents’ lives every day; and
Whereas, in celebration of their 125th year of serving San Francisco, the Ladies Home community of supporters are jubilant to gather today to express profound gratitude to everyone who helped the Home reach this auspicious milestone; now
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Gavin Newsom, Mayor of the City and County of San Francisco, in celebration of their 125th Anniversary, do hereby proclaim November 12, 2009, as . . .
University Mound Ladies Home Day
in San Francisco!
