Meet Our Ladies

Each of our ladies has an interesting story to tell. We would like to share a few with you:

Barbara was born in San Francisco at Mount Zion Hospital (now UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion) and graduated from Galileo High School.

She earned her bachelor's degree from San Jose State University and received her master's degree in education from San Francisco State University. She raised two children, wrote art education books, and taught at San Francisco State University and at Chapman University in Orange, California. Barbara continued to work until she was in her late 70s.

The California Mission Society honored Barbara for her work in helping educators teach their students about California missions. One recent summer, Barbara and her daughter spent a week studying Spanish in Mexico. Since returning from her trip, Barbara spends an hour each day studying and practicing her Spanish. "The University Mound Ladies Home," according to Barbara's daughter, "has been an oasis for my mother and for me as well. She feels respected and loved."

Lorraine was born at St. Luke’s Hospital in San Francisco and grew up in San Francisco’s Mission District.

After graduating from San Jose State University, Lorraine began her career as a social worker serving the poor immigrant population in San Francisco. Lorraine's clients loved her, and one particularly pleased client renamed her "my angel" for finding him a better board and care placement.

Early in her career, Lorraine met Frank. After a four-month courtship, they married and that union lasted 52 years. Lorraine devoted herself to her new career as a wife and wonderful mother to their two daughters. Lorraine took pride in maintaining the family home in San Leandro, where she lived until she moved to the Ladies Home in July 2006. Lorraine appreciates the cleanliness of the Ladies Home and gets special enjoyment from the many musical groups that perform here and the SPCA volunteers that bring animals to visit the residents.
